Let's Get Started!

Alright, let’s take a closer look at the shoes with the best average rating and see what shoe reviewers had to say about them:

The Top 20 Basketball Shoes:

1. Air Jordan 36 Low

Performance Rating:
9.2
The Jordan 36 Low performs almost identically to the Jordan 36.
Overall rating based on 4 reviews
Pros:
More comfortable fit than the regular 36
Amazing traction
Cons:
Does not contain as well as the regular 36
Slight heel slippage
What do the experts think?
Jordan Brand's low-top version of its mainline shoe has an identical traction pattern but uses a solid rubber compound. It performs pretty much the same, which is to say it's great. The cushion also remains the same. It's bouncy and is potentially the best setup on the market. Some reviewers feel that the Low fits slightly better than the regular 36 because of the materials. The support is solid and hard to beat for a low-top, but some reviewers mentioned experiencing heel slippage. Overall, the Jordan 36 Low is just as good a choice for a performance basketball shoe as the mid-top version.

2. Air Jordan 36

Performance Rating:
9.1
The latest Air Jordan mainline signature model is, once again, a top-performing shoe.
Overall rating based on 8 reviews
Pros:
Absolutely no issues at all with the traction
Cushion feels amazing
Cons:
The outsole can be a tiny bit unsteady
They fit narrow and snug
What do the experts think?
The Air Jordan 36 continues the recent trend from Jordan brand and picks up right where the last two models left off. The traction is phenomenal. It performs well on both clean and dusty courts. All reviewers agree that the cushioning used in the 36 performs amazingly, but they also agree that the Air unit protruding from the outsole is unnecessary. The fit is snug and narrow, so if that's not your cup of tea, consider sizing up. Materials are slimmed way down this year. They make the shoe lightweight without sacrificing much in terms of comfort and durability. The surprisingly strong upper and the outsole materials wrapping upward towards the midsole make the support in this shoe solid. Being the latest signature shoe in the lineup, the Air Jordan 36 delivers and is yet another high-quality performance basketball shoe.

3. Puma Clyde All-Pro

Performance Rating:
9.1
The Puma Clyde All-Pro is another outstanding release from Puma.
Overall rating based on 4 reviews
Pros:
Top tier traction
Great materials
Cons:
Could have more impact protection
What do the experts think?
The traction on the Puma Clyde All-Pro is outstanding and was compared to the Kobe 9 by reviewers. The durability is solid and should be fine for occasional outdoor use. The cushion setup features the improved ProFoam+ which is softer and has more compression. This cushioning is still more on the responsive side though. Another highlight of this shoe is the upper material which is super minimal, lightweight, and very comfortable after breaking in. Going true to size will give you a snug fit that wraps around your foot really well. Reviewers had no issues with the support as it comes with all the standard features we've come to expect from basketball shoes: a wide base, outrigger, and a solid internal heel counter. Overall the Puma Clyde All-Pro is a fantastic all-around performer and a steal at $130!

4. Nike KD 15

Performance Rating:
9.0
The Nike KD 15 is a shoe that has something for every type of player.
Overall rating based on 9 reviews
Pros:
Amazing traction
Bouncy cushion
Cons:
Some heel slippage
What do the experts think?
The traction is a standout feature on the Nike KD 15. It bites to every type of court, performing amazingly. Reviewers agreed that the cushioning offers a unique combination of court feel, responsiveness, bounciness, and impact protection. The materials conform to your feet nicely and are comfortable to play in. The shoe also fits better than previous KD models and is more accommodating to different foot shapes. If there is any downside, some reviewers experienced a bit of heel slippage. Others didn't feel completely secure around the heel. The Nike KD 15 could be one of the best performance shoes available.

5. Under Armour Curry 10

Performance Rating:
8.9
The Curry 10 makes slight improvements and continues to be a top-tier performer.
Overall rating based on 4 reviews
Pros:
Top-tier traction
Comfortable materials
Cons:
Impact protection isn't the best
What do the experts think?
As we've come to expect, the Flow traction is fantastic. It's some of the best traction available. The cushioning is responsive and low to the ground. The shank also offers some additional bounce. The materials feel similar to the Curry 9 from last year. It does feel a tad bit more comfortable, though. Support and lockdown are better than last year because of a better heel counter and more supportive construction. Overall, the Curry 10 improves on last year's model and remains a top performer because of the outstanding traction.

6. Puma MB.01 Lo

Performance Rating:
8.9
Following the footsteps of the original Puma MB.01, the low-top remains one of the top performance options on the market.
Overall rating based on 4 reviews
Pros:
Aggressive, grippy traction
Balanced cushioning setup
Cons:
Cheap feeling materials
What do the experts think?
Not much changed between the original Puma MB.01 and the low-top version. The traction is still reliable on all surfaces. Puma's Nitro foam is a balanced cushioning setup offering both impact protection and responsiveness. The fit can be narrow, but the materials are comfortable and get the job done performance-wise. The shoe also has solid support features to keep your foot secure and contained. Overall, the Puma MB.01 Low continues the trend of Puma releasing quality performance basketball shoes.

7. Under Armour Curry 9

Performance Rating:
8.9
The Curry Flow 9 manages to improve on its impressive predecessor.
Overall rating based on 7 reviews
Pros:
Traction is phenomenal
Improved materials
Cons:
Not the greatest for impact protection
What do the experts think?
The Curry Flow 9 continues to build on the performance that the 8 provided last year. The traction pattern and material are identical, but that's not a bad thing. Reviewers agree that the performance is phenomenal in this regard. For cushioning, the responsive and court feel are fantastic. The only thing the cushion lacks is impact protection which is just adequate. The materials are much improved from last year and feel premium for performance. It's lightweight, thin, and comfortable. The fit starts out snug and narrow, but the materials conform to your foot over time. Support and lockdown continue to be fantastic just like the rest of the Curry line. Reviewers agree that the Curry Flow 9 is one of the best shoes available on the market right now, and the shoe is a pleasure to play in.

8. Nike KD 14

Performance Rating:
8.9
The KD14 is a great overall performer with no obvious weaknesses.
Overall rating based on 8 reviews
Pros:
Soft & comfortable cushioning
Doesn't have any weaknesses
Cons:
A little bulky
What do the experts think?
For some reviewers, the traction of the KD14 took a little to break-in, but they all agreed that it provides a ton of grip on clean courts and doesn't have much trouble with dusty courts either. The Zoom Strobel and Cushlon midsole provide a perfect mix of comfort, impact protection, and responsiveness. One reviewer coined it the softest KD to date. Materials are a little cheap to the touch but they are comfortable on foot and combined with the wide base and plastic enforcement on the sides provide a lot of lockdown and support. The fit is less narrow than previous KD's and should work for most players unless you have super wide feet. Overall, reviewers agree that the KD14 is a slight improvement over the KD13 and a great overall performer that is absolutely worth the $150 price tag.

9. Nike Lebron 20

Performance Rating:
8.8
The Nike LeBron 20 excels with its bouncy cushion and solid traction, but it has something to offer every player.
Overall rating based on 6 reviews
Pros:
Bouncy cushion setup
Tacky traction compound
Cons:
Not much court feel
High price tag
What do the experts think?
The traction on the LeBron 20 is tacky, and it grips most court surfaces. The occasional wipe is needed, but it doesn't hinder performance. Nike toned the cushioning down from previous models, but it's still insanely bouncy. The materials are comfortable, thin, and breathable on foot. It also helps to keep you contained during play. On fit, some reviewers praised the LeBron 20 for its snug, 1-to-1 fit. Other reviewers had split opinions on how the shoe accommodates wide footers. The lacing and materials work together to keep your foot contained on the footbed. Reviewers didn't have any complaints when it came to the support of the shoe. Overall, the Nike LeBron 20 is an impressive all-around performer. The traction, cushioning, and support are versatile enough to offer something to most players.

10. Li-Ning Way of Wade 10

Performance Rating:
8.8
The Li-Ning Way of Wade 10 features an outstanding cushioning setup alongside its grippy traction.
Overall rating based on 4 reviews
Pros:
Incredibly bouncy cushioning
Amazing traction
Cons:
High price tag
Soft rubber isn't suitable for outdoors
What do the experts think?
Reviewers describe the cushioning on the Way of Wade 10 as incredibly bouncy. It's easily the most raved-about feature of the shoe. Its outsole traction is soft and grippy, perfect for indoor play. The materials are lightweight and perform well, but reviewers mention they could be more premium based on the shoe's price. Support and lockdown aren't an issue. There were no reported problems from any reviewers. Li-Ning and Dwyane Wade's latest signature model, the Way of Wade 10, is an excellent basketball shoe that can contend for performance shoe of the year.

11. Nike Air Zoom GT Jump

Performance Rating:
8.8
The tech-loaded Nike GT Jump's performance is outstanding.
Overall rating based on 8 reviews
Pros:
The tech works well together for performance
Jump frame is as good as advertised
Cons:
A bit on the heavier side
What do the experts think?
The final release in Nike's GT series, the GT Jump, manages to find a way to make all of the tech Nike threw in it work well together. The traction gripped all the different surfaces that reviewers tested it on while still keeping up with the cushioning. When it comes to cushioning, if you're a fan of Nike Zoom, you're going to love these. It's bouncy, provides ample impact protection, and is very fast to play in. Nike uses Jumpwire combined with synthetics and meshes to keep the shoe breathable without compromising performance. Most reviewers also agree that the Jumpframe is a standout aspect of the shoe. It helps secure the foot so that the player doesn't feel unstable on top of the cushioning. Although the wait was long, the Nike Air Zoom GT Jump delivers, and it's one of the best shoes to come out this year.

12. Nike Air Zoom G.T. Cut

Performance Rating:
8.8
The Nike Air Zoom G.T Cut is a great low-profile shoe packed with Nike's latest tech.
Overall rating based on 8 reviews
Pros:
Cushion is responsive yet bouncy
Plays very fast
Cons:
Heavier than expected
Unnecessary material around the heel area
What do the experts think?
A majority of reviewers agree that the traction for the Air Zoom G.T Cut performed very well on clean courts and only needs occasional wiping on dusty courts. The combination of the drop-in React midsole and the Zoom Air Strobel underfoot helps to create a very responsive ride that still manages to be bouncy. However, one reviewer did note that their React midsole felt a little bit firm. Materials on the shoe are breathable and feel comfortable on foot. The fit is snug and slightly narrow in the forefoot area. One reviewer recommended sizing up half a size if you have wide feet. Most reviewers agree that the Nike Air Zoom G.T. Cut is an excellent performer loaded with tech that justifies the price tag.

13. Nike Cosmic Unity

Performance Rating:
8.8
The Nike Cosmic Unity is made from 25% recycled trash but doesn't perform like trash at all.
Overall rating based on 4 reviews
Pros:
Balanced cushion
Great support
Cons:
Inconsistent traction on dust
What do the experts think?
The Nike Cosmic Unity is part of Nike's sustainability push and made from at least 25% trash. Is the performance on the court trash as well? The traction features a traditional herringbone pattern that performs well on clean courts but struggles a little on dusty surfaces. The cushion setup uses the same Zoom Air Strobel as the KD 12 and 13 and provides nice impact protection and responsiveness. The midsole is very low to the ground and gives your great court feel. The knit materials are nice to the touch and very durable. Performance-wise you'll have no issues! The support provides everything you've come to expect from performance basketball shoes with solid lateral stability and containment. Overall the Nike Cosmic Unity is a solid performer in every category. Just watch out if you play on dusty courts often.

14. Nike PG 5

Performance Rating:
8.8
The PG 5 is a great all-around performer and a nice upgrade over the PG 4.
Overall rating based on 6 reviews
Pros:
Phenomenal traction
Responsive cushioning
Cons:
Cheap materials
What do the experts think?
The traction pattern of the PG 5 is very similar to the Kobe 9 pattern and provides top-tier traction indoors. Unfortunately, the outsole isn't durable enough for outdoor use. The cushion tech is similar to last year but feels pretty different. The PG 5 isn't as plush but provides a better court feel and more responsiveness. The materials are what you've come to expect from the PG line: They feel pretty cheap but they perform well and are comfortable on foot. The PG 5 fits like most PG models slightly narrow and snug. True to size works well. The support and lockdown are very good thanks to a wide base and large outrigger - reviewers had no issues here. Overall the PG 5 is a great all-around performer and a real bargain at a list price of only $110.

15. Puma MB.02

Performance Rating:
8.7
The Puma MB.02 is an upgrade in almost every way, especially the support.
Overall rating based on 4 reviews
Pros:
Support features are top notch
Plenty of impact protection
Cons:
Can pick up dust
Breathability could be better
What do the experts think?
The Puma MB.02 has a reliable traction pattern, but reviewers report dust can build up, so remember to wipe. Reviewers agree the cushioning feels denser than the MB.01. It offers more impact protection, but the bounce is minimal. The materials on the shoe are thinner, making it easier to break them in on this year's model. Puma's done a great job of implementing the support features. Strategically placed fuse overlays maximize the containment of the shoe. Overall, Puma takes a step in the right direction with incremental upgrades to the Puma MB.02. It plays well and comes with a reasonable price tag.

16. Li-Ning Wade 808 2

Performance Rating:
8.7
The Wade 808 2 offers fantastic traction and a versatile drop-in midsole.
Overall rating based on 3 reviews
Pros:
Traction grips courts hard
Comfortable drop-in midsole
Cons:
Cushioning on hard impact can be better
The fit is slightly long
What do the experts think?
The traction of the Wade 808 2 is grippy and reminiscent of the Kobe 9 traction. The rubber is also hard enough to take outdoors. Li-Ning's drop-in midsole is comfortable, and it feels bouncy. The only downside is the impact protection on hard landings. Reviewers describe the materials on the shoe as minimal and breathable. Despite not having an outrigger, the shoe has plenty of lateral containment and stability. Overall, the Li-Ning Wade 808 2 is a versatile shoe with enough traction and cushioning for most players.

17. Nike Air Zoom G.T. Cut 2

Performance Rating:
8.6
The Nike Air Zoom G.T. Cut 2 continues to offer plenty of cushioning and solid overall performance.
Overall rating based on 7 reviews
Pros:
Plush and bouncy cushioning
Drop-in midsole offers a lot of support
Cons:
Not the most durable materials
What do the experts think?
The second installment in the G.T. Cut lineup features solid traction, but a break-in time is needed. It also isn't as good as the original. Cushioning for the shoe continues to offer some of the best bounce and impact protection. The drop-in midsole also features an improved liner for extra grip. The material used on the shoe makes it feel lighter, but some reviewers mentioned missing the plastic side wall previously on the lateral side. Players that enjoy a snug fit will enjoy the fit on the G.T. Cut 2. There's a lack of torsional stability, but the rest of the support and lockdown features perform well. The Nike Air Zoom G.T. Cut 2 is a solid performer with fantastic cushioning.

18. Air Jordan 37

Performance Rating:
8.5
The Air Jordan 37 is a top performer with bouncy forefoot cushioning and strong materials.
Overall rating based on 5 reviews
Pros:
Bouncy forefoot cushioning
Materials are strong for performance
Cons:
Materials are not premium
Heel cushioning could be better
What do the experts think?
Jordan Brand switches up the traction to look more like the traction on the Zion 1, but the performance is still there. The double-stacked Zoom Strobel and Zoom Air unit in the forefoot provide plenty of bounce and responsiveness. Meanwhile, the heel cushioning is Formula 23, and it feels caged. All reviewers agree that the materials are not premium but excel in all performance aspects. The fit is improved compared to last year's Air Jordan 36. It accommodates slightly wide feet better. The support features are all there too. The materials work well to keep the foot contained during play. The latest mainline Jordan, the Air Jordan 37, offers innovative performance and has plenty of features to love.

19. Jordan Luka 1

Performance Rating:
8.5
The Jordan Luka 1 offers fantastic traction and tons of lateral support.
Overall rating based on 9 reviews
Pros:
The traction bites hard
Offers plenty of support
Cons:
Materials aren't the most breathable
What do the experts think?
Luka Doncic's first signature shoe with Jordan Brand delivers an outstanding traction experience. It feels tacky and bites hard in all directions. The use of Jordan Brand's new Formula 23 foam feels like an upgrade from React. Reviewers mention that the cushioning feels low-to-the-ground and responsive. For support, the side pods and the unique shank plate implemented in the shoe keep you contained while also offering some bounce back. Most reviewers agreed that the materials perform well and feel comfortable on your feet. Overall, the Jordan Luka 1 is an admirable first entry into the signature shoe landscape for Luka Doncic.

20. New Balance TWO WXY V2

Performance Rating:
8.5
Traction on the TWO WXY V2 is outstanding, but the other features don't disappoint.
Overall rating based on 5 reviews
Pros:
The traction bites hard
Materials are form-fitting and comfortable
Cons:
Material quality could be more premium
Not offered in wide fit options
What do the experts think?
Reviewers agree that traction is the best feature of the shoe. It bites hard on just about every surface. The cushioning is low to the ground and offers a good amount of court feel. The impact protection in the heel is adequate but could be better in the forefoot. No issues were reported support-wise. It gets the job done. The FitWeave Lite that New Balance uses for the upper is comfortable and conforms nicely to your feet during play. With its hard-biting traction and no glaring weaknesses, the New Balance TWO WXY V2 might be New Balance's best basketball shoe.

Picking your next pair of basketball shoes

Picking your next pair of basketball shoes can be difficult. Finding out about the latest releases, reading reviews, checking prices, and getting the right size – it often takes me days or even weeks to settle on a new pair.

Now, maybe I am just really picky when it comes to basketball sneakers, but there is a reason why!

Good basketball shoes are important because:
  • They grip the floor and allow quick cuts and crossovers
  • They provide impact protection and reduce the stress on your knees and feet
  • They fit comfortably and lock down your feet tightly
  • They provide support and protect your ankles from rolling

In short: Good basketball shoes will help you to get the most out of your game!

How to find basketball shoes that fit your playing style

The list above is a great way to find basketball shoes that perform well overall, but not every basketball shoe will work the same for different types of players. Quick guards will need different shoes than big and heavy centers.

But how do you know what kind of shoe you need? In the following paragraphs, I want to go into more detail and tell you what to look for to find your perfect fit!

Let’s talk about the most important characteristics of basketball kicks and what you want to look for when you are in the market for a new pair:

Style of the silhouette

There are three different styles of basketball shoes out there: Low tops, mid tops, and high tops. Traditionally, basketball players used to play in high tops that completely covered the ankle of players, but nowadays, more and more players are wearing low-tops that look more like regular training shoes. Let’s take a closer look at each style and their pros and cons:

Low Tops:

Low-cut shoes provide maximum flexibility and are often very lightweight. They are perfect for guards who want to feel light and quick on their feet and don’t want to add unnecessary bulk. Bigger and slower guys don’t profit as much from low tops and might look for the protection of higher cut shoes. Low-cuts were made most popular by the Kobe signature line:

Mid Tops:

Mid Tops are a hybrid between low- and high tops and provide a little bit of both worlds: Good flexibility and mobility, but also a decent amount of ankle protection and more stability. Perfect for forwards or wings who don’t need all the flexibility of a low top, but also don’t like the bulkiness of true high tops. An example of a mid top basketball shoes is the Kyrie 3:

High Tops:

This is the way basketball shoes used to look like for decades. High Tops provide a lot of ankle protection, support and are often nicely cushioned. Perfect for big guys who are looking for maximum protection when they are fighting below the rim and don’t mind losing a little bit of flexibility in exchange for more safety. A popular example is the Lebron signature line:

Traction

If you plan to do explosive crossovers and quick cuts you need a shoe that provides excellent traction. Nothing is more annoying than slipping every time you try to change directions.

The amount of traction provided by a shoe relies on two factors: the traction pattern and the rubber compound used for the outsole.

Traction pattern:

A very popular traction pattern that is often used in basketball shoes is the “herringbone” pattern. Zig-zag lines of rubber provide grip in every direction and the empty space in between the rubber makes sure that dust doesn’t stick to the surface of the sole.

Herringbone traction almost always works; unfortunately, other traction patterns are often hit or miss. Sometimes designers try to get too innovative or focus on storytelling, and you end up with a shoe that needs endless wiping or feels like playing on skates.

Herringbone Traction

Herringbone Traction Pattern

Rubber Compound

The quality of the rubber compound is much harder to judge than the traction pattern. Softer rubber will often work better indoors but attract a lot of dust, hard rubber is a lot more durable but doesn’t provide the same grip on pristine hardwood courts. As a rule of thumb, if you have the option between colorways with translucent and solid outer soles, always go with the solid option. A solid rubber outer sole might not look as nice, but it often performs much better especially on dusty courts.

Cushion

The cushioning of a basketball shoe becomes more important the heavier you are. If you are a 5’6″ guard who weighs 140 lbs, you won’t need a lot of cushioning, and you will probably prefer the responsiveness and court feel of a firmer setup. But bigger and heavier guys put a lot of pressure on their joints and profit immensely from a softer and more forgiving cushioning.

There are countless cushioning technologies on the market, and every company has different styles for different use cases or budgets. The most popular tech is probably Nike Zoom Air cushioning which is made of tightly stretched tensile fibers in a pressurized “Air” unit embedded in the midsole. Other cushioning setups like Adidas Bounce, Nike Lunarlon, or UnderArmour MicroG are foam-based and provide impact protection by distributing impact forces more evenly.

Nike Zoom Air

Nike Zoom Air

Other than traction, cushioning really comes down to personal preference. If you are a quick and light guard, you want to look for a firm cushioning setup like Nike Lunarlon or Adidas Bounce. Cushioning that is too soft will only make you lose court feel and responsiveness.

However, if you are a bigger player or you have a history of knee problems, you will fare much better with a more comfortable cushioning like full-length Zoom Air or Adidas Boost.

Support

If you think of supportive basketball shoes, you probably imagine a bulky high top with a lot of straps and laces. Fortunately, modern basketball shoes have found other ways to provides athletes with the necessary safety and stability. Just look at the shoes which are worn in the NBA today – a lot of players wear low tops that were unimaginable only 20 years ago.

A common support feature used in almost every modern basketball shoe is the outrigger. Usually placed on the lateral side of the shoe, this extension of the outer sole makes the base of the shoe wider and provides a stable platform that protects your feet from rolling.

Other often-used support features are midfoot shanks that provide torsional support and heel counters that lock you into the shoe. But one of the most significant support factors is the fit and lockdown of a shoe. All the support features in the world will not help you if you are sliding side-to-side on every cut because your sneakers are just too wide.

Lateral Outrigger

Lateral Outrigger

If you are recovering from an ankle injury and need even more support around the ankle, you should look into getting an additional ankle brace.

Fit

The fit is one of the most important things to consider when buying new shoes. You want to be firmly locked in and not sliding left-to-right or front-to-back at all. If you can, it’s always a good idea to try on shoes in a store. If that’s not an option, I like to get shoes in two different sizes, keep the better fitting pair and use the return policy for the other one.

If shoes are a little tight in the beginning that’s okay, they usually widen and become more comfortable as you break them in. If you are unsure which size to get, or you have unusually wide or narrow feet and you are looking for a particular fit, then check out this list of shoes. You can filter shoes to only include narrow-, or wide-fitting shoes, and find out which model runs large or small by reading the more detailed review.

Material

There is a wide variety of upper materials used in basketball shoes these days ranging from traditional nubuck leather to synthetic mesh or high-tech textile materials like Adidas PrimeKnit or Nike Flyknit.

Cheaper materials like Mesh or other synthetic uppers often start out rather stiff and need a little time to break-in. High-tech materials are often reserved for more expensive signature lines like Air Jordan’s or Kobes and are really soft and comfortable from the beginning.

Aside from aesthetics and comfort, modern materials used in basketball shoes all do a very nice job and don’t differ too much when it comes to performance. Just pick whatever material you personally prefer and can afford.

Founded in 1996, Under Armour made its first big splash in the basketball world when they signed Steph Curry in 2013.

Fresh of Steph’s league MVP and NBA championship the first two editions of the UA Curry became huge sellers and propelled Under Armour into the upper echelons of basketball footwear.

Since then, Steph Curry’s signature series has cooled off a little but Under Armour is committed to basketball more than ever and signed another NBA All-Star in Joel Embiid.

Apart from their basketball signature series, Under Armour also produces popular team models like the Anatomix Spawn or HOVR Havoc.

The Best Under Armour Basketball Shoes

3. Under Armour Flow FUTR X

Performance Rating:
8.3
The Under Armour Flow FUTR X is an amazing budget-friendly alternative to the Curry Flow 8 if you don't need a lot of cushioning.
Overall rating based on 3 reviews
Pros:
Has amazing traction
Midfoot strap that actually works
Cons:
Not much in terms of impact protection
Cheap feeling materials
What do the experts think?
Just like the Curry Flow 8, the traction of the Under Armour Flow FUTR X is amazing. It bites regardless of whether the court is clean or dusty, and the Flow outsole is more durable than it appears. The cushion leans towards the firm side of things, but it is low to the ground and provides excellent responsiveness. Materials felt cheap to the touch but perform decently enough considering the price. The fit is true to size and should be able to accommodate most foot shapes. This is due to the materials stretching out a bit over time. Under Armour managed to implement a midfoot strap that's able to contribute to more than just aesthetics. It improved the lateral containment of the shoe, helping to keep you properly supported. The Under Armour Flow FUTR X is a fantastic option at just $120. The traction is outstanding, the cushion provides a good court feel, and there weren't any issues with the support.

4. Under Armour Curry HOVR Splash

Performance Rating:
7.8
Overall rating based on 1 reviews

Cons:

Best Jordans for Basketball

3. Jordan React Elevation

Performance Rating:
8.7
A great all around performer at a solid price.
Overall rating based on 2 reviews
Pros:
Great cushion setup
Traction works well on all surfaces
Cons:
Materials could be more premium
What do the experts think?
The traction of the Jordan React Elevation performs nicely on clean courts, dusty courts, and outdoor courts. They have you covered no matter where you play. The cushion setup with React foam in the heel and Zoom in the forefoot is very comfortable and provides nice impact protection as well as court feel. The materials are nothing crazy, but they get the job done well and provide good support. The lacing system provides very good lockdown and reviewers found that true to size worked great. The support is also fantastic - you should have no issues with lateral containment or stability. Overall the Jordan React Elevation is a very good performer that comes in at a nice price. Reviewers had a lot of fun playing in these!

6. Jordan Zoom Separate

Performance Rating:
8.4
The Jordan Zoom Separate is a great option for specific types of players.
Overall rating based on 7 reviews
Pros:
Forefoot support is outstanding
Great cushion toward the front of the shoe
Cons:
Materials are not of the best quality
What do the experts think?
The Jordan Zoom Separate is the latest budget-friendly model in the Jordan brand lineup. It has grippy traction that plays well on most court surfaces. Cushioning is the aspect of the shoe that stands out the most. The air unit in the forefoot makes this shoe great for forefoot-heavy players looking for impact protection. Materials aren't the most durable, but they get the job done. These are supportive and stable underfoot. The wide base of the shoe and outrigger helps, and the lacing setup allows for extra customization. As a whole, the Jordan Zoom Separate is a strong option to consider for anyone on a budget. It'll be a favourite for players that move a lot on the front of their feet since the cushioning caters to that type of playstyle.

7. Jordan Zion 2

Performance Rating:
8.3
The Jordan Zion 2 is a supportive shoe with traction to boot.
Overall rating based on 9 reviews
Pros:
Solid traction
Support and lockdown are on point
Cons:
Kind of heavy
Not the most breathable materials
What do the experts think?
The Jordan Zion 2 plays with consistent traction, especially on clean courts. The cushioning is responsive but also bouncy. It felt well-balanced, although not the most plush. Reviewers had split opinions on the materials. Some liked that the materials were durable and provided extra support, but others felt the shoe was not breathable or flexible. The reviewers agreed that the support and lockdown were one of the better, more consistent features. The strap, in particular, does a good job of locking you into the shoe. Overall, the Jordan Zion 2 performs well for players who make a lot of hard cuts.

8. Jordan Why Not Zero.4

Performance Rating:
8.3
Russell Westbrook's fourth signature shoe is a pretty good all-around performer.
Overall rating based on 3 reviews
Pros:
Solid support
Bouncy forefoot cushioning
Cons:
Inconsistent traction
Materials could be more premium
What do the experts think?
The traction on Russell Westbrook's 4th signature shoe is decent on linear moves but has trouble on lateral movements. Overall it is pretty inconsistent especially on dust. The cushion features super bouncy double-stacked Zoom units in the forefoot. The court feel isn't great but still good enough. The wild mix of different materials doesn't feel very premium to the touch but they conform to your feet well and get the job done performance-wise. Go true to size and you should get a comfortable fit with minimal dead space in the toe box. The support is great all-around and has you covered for lateral stability and containment. Overall the Why Not Zero.4 is a solid performer, with the only downside being the inconsistent traction.

9. Jordan One Take 3

Performance Rating:
8.0
The Jordan One Take 3 delivers quality performance for the Westbrook budget line.
Overall rating based on 2 reviews
Pros:
The traction is nice and grippy
Lightweight and responsive feeling shoe
Cons:
Snug and narrow fit
What do the experts think?
The traction performs much better than expected for a budget model. It bites nicely on clean courts and handles dust well on dirtier courts. Minimal wiping gets the job done. Reviewers were also pleasantly surprised by the cushioning in this model. The forefoot Zoom unit makes the shoe fun to play in. Although the materials feel like plastic, they do not hamper the shoe's performance at all. The shoe also has no issues with support and lockdown. It provides solid lateral containment while still feeling stable. The Jordan One Take 3 is a perfect example of a budget model done right.

10. Jordan Zion 1

Performance Rating:
8.0
Zion's first signature shoe is a solid all-around performer.
Overall rating based on 8 reviews
Pros:
Large outrigger & very supportive
Well balanced cushioning
Cons:
Materials feel a little cheap in hand
Padding on the tongue is a little lacking
What do the experts think?
At Duke, Zion Williamson once destroyed a shoe in-game when his foot ripped through the upper material. The Zion 1 comes with one of the most extreme lateral outriggers ever in a basketball shoe to prevent another accident like this. The traction pattern is very sticky on clean courts, but is a little bit of a dust magnet and needs consistent wiping on dirty courts. The cushioning is well-balanced with a soft foam midsole, Air Strobel, and forefoot Zoom unit. It's not overly bouncy but provides impact protection and feels very smooth when transitioning from heel to toe. The materials are thin, soft, and get the job done but they definitely don't look or feel premium. Overall, the Zion 1 is a solid and affordable first signature sneaker that works for all player types.

11. Jordan Why Not Zero.5

Performance Rating:
7.8
The Jordan Why Not .5 implements a solid cushioning setup.
Overall rating based on 4 reviews
Pros:
Zoom unit feels nice
Cons:
Poor performing traction
Quality of the materials
What do the experts think?
Russell Westbrook's latest signature shoe is held back by its poor traction. Reviewers agree that it just doesn't grip well. Its cushion could be the one saving grace. The forefoot Zoom feels bouncy and provides a nice ride. Reviewers also agree that the quality of the materials isn't the best, but it doesn't hinder performance whatsoever. The fit conforms to your foot once you've broken the shoe in. There are also no issues with the support and lockdown, and the shoe feels stable laterally. Overall, the Jordan Why Not .5 has everything you need in a performance basketball shoe except the traction. It could be much better if it gripped the court consistently.

12. Jordan One Take 2

Performance Rating:
7.4
The Jordan One Take 2 does not live up to its predecessor.
Overall rating based on 2 reviews
Pros:
The upper is well ventilated
Solid fit
Cons:
Cheap materials compromise the support
Inconsistent traction
What do the experts think?
When it comes to traction, reviewers were split on their opinion of how consistent the shoe performed. It played well enough on indoor courts, but it wasn't spectacular. Cushioning on the One Take 2 is stiff and a bit too high off the ground for a guard shoe. However, the top-loaded Zoom unit in the forefoot does provide a little bit of extra bounce. Fit is the most consistent aspect of the shoe. Going true to size caused no issues. The materials are not the best quality, but they do a decent job in terms of performance. They're lightweight and breathable. Although the Jordan One Take 2 is not as good of a performer as its predecessor, it's still a decent shoe considering the price of just $100.

Classic basketball shoes like the Chuck Talor or the Air Jordan 1 feature a high top silhouette with the shoe extending up above the ankle bone. This extra support is intended to provide more stability for the ankle joint and help protect players from ankle sprains and other injuries.

These days, low tops have become much more popular and safe thanks to advances in technology and design (wide bases and lateral outriggers provide more stability), but there are still a lot of basketball players out there so prefer high top basketball shoes.

Why pick high tops?

  • Big and heavy players in particular feel safer and more protected wearing high tops
  • Many prefer the classic and old school look of high tops
  • Modern materials significantly reduces the weight of shoes

The following list is a quick overview of the 10 best-rated high cut basketball shoes currently on the market:

  • 9.1 rating based on 8 expert reviews
  • The latest Air Jordan mainline signature model is, once again, a top-performing shoe.

The Nike Kyrie 8 is a welcome improvement in the Kyrie lineup.
Overall rating based on 7 reviews

Materials could feel more premium
What do the experts think?
As controversial as Kyrie Irving is, his signature basketball shoe continues to be a quality performer. The traction is what you come to expect from the Kyrie lineup. It performs well, similarly to the previous models. For the Kyrie 8, Nike implemented a forefoot Zoom Strobel that adds a new dimension of bounce while still remaining low to the ground. The materials used feel comfortable while providing quality performance. They're also thin and breathable. The lacing system helps to provide a fit that won't cause issues for most people. Reviewers also agree that the lateral containment and lockdown provided are excellent. When it comes down to it, the Nike Kyrie 8 is an excellent shoe that caters to many different playstyles.

Reviewers agree that the grippy traction is the best part of the Li-Ning Way of Wade 9 Infinity. The cushioning setup feels springy, but the impact protection could be better. It's great at propelling players forward. The materials are thin and breathable, and the lacing system is well done. None of the reviewers mentioned any glaring issues with support, which is a positive sign for a shoe that's so high off the ground. With excellent traction, and a strong, durable outsole, the Way of Wade 9 Infinity offers the tech and performance to warrant its high price tag.

8.3
The Kawhi 2 is an improvement on the 1 in almost every way.
Overall rating based on 8 reviews
Pros:
Improved materials
Grippy traction
Cons:
Not the best for impact protection
No additional width options with this model
What do the experts think?
Kawhi Leonard's latest signature model with New Balance is a solid step in the right direction. The traction bites on just about any surface after an initial break-in period. New Balance keeps the shoe feeling low to the ground and responsive with the full-length FuelCell setup. It isn't the plushest, but it helps players feel nimble. The materials used on the upper of the shoe are lightweight, breathable, and make the shoe feel very supportive. Working together with the materials, the heel counter and outsole tread that wraps up the shoe, keep your foot feeling secure. These features make support and lockdown a non-issue in the shoe. Most reviewers had no issues with the fit, but they did mention that New Balance doesn't seem to offer this model in extra widths. Overall, the New Balance Kawhi 2 is a strong performer that provides excellent traction and stability.

7. Nike Lebron 19

Performance Rating:
8.3
The Nike LeBron 19 is better in almost every way compared to last year's model.
Overall rating based on 8 reviews
Pros:
They provide good support and stability
The cushion feels incredible
Cons:
Traction can be inconsistent at times
They fit a bit snug
What do the experts think?
The latest entry in LeBron's signature shoe line gets off to a shaky start with reviewers mentioning that the traction performs inconsistently. As always with the LeBron line, the cushioning is the standout performance aspect. The shoe has ample impact protection while still finding a way to feel bouncy due to the forefoot Zoom Air. The fit can be snug. However, the materials do loosen up once broken in. Speaking of materials, they are much improved this year. The upper feels light and is comfortable straight out of the box. There are no issues with support and lockdown. In fact, the lateral containment is even a highlight for the LeBron 19. Overall, the Nike LeBron 19 is a fun shoe to play in with its crazy cushion setup, improved materials, and solid support. The only downside is the traction.

8. Nike Air Deldon

Performance Rating:
7.7
The Air Deldon has a comfortable cushioning setup but inconsistent overall performance.
Overall rating based on 3 reviews
Pros:
Comfortable cushion setup
Supportive fit
Cons:
Inconsistent traction
Poor quality materials
What do the experts think?
Elena Delle Donne's debut sneaker features a traction pattern reviewers said was inconsistent. It performs on clean courts but is poor whenever dust is present. The cushioning is a full-length Air Strobel and a forefoot Zoom unit. The setup is comfortable while still providing some bounce. Reviewers have divided opinions on the materials. Some say the materials are poor quality, and others say it's plush and comfortable. The support and lockdown are surprisingly stable despite not having a traditional heel counter. Overall, the Nike Air Deldon is a mixed bag performance-wise. The traction has a lot of room for improvement, but the cushioning and support perform well.

For the longest time, basketball shoes were bulky high-tops designed to provide support and protection. But as the game of basketball evolved to become quicker and more athletic, basketball shoes adapted and became lighter, more flexible using less material.

The shoe that made low-tops popular and mainstream among NBA players, as well as recreational athletes, was the Nike Kobe 4. Released in 2009, this Kobe signature sneaker started a trend that was quickly picked up by models like the Hyperdunk Lows or the KDs.

Nowadays, low-tops have gained widespread adoption among NBA players thanks to a few advantages they have over the traditional high tops.

Advantages of Low Tops:

  • They are lighter and more flexible

The right shoes will increase your vertical jump and make dunking much easier!

The post Shoes That Make You Jump Higher? Best Basketball Shoes for Dunking appeared first on The Hoops Geek.

Like every basketball player, I always wanted to be able to dunk. Unfortunately, at only 6-feet tall, this takes a TON of hard work.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there were shoes that turned you from unathletic, slow, and ground-bound into the next Vince Carter?

Good news! There’s one shoe brand out there that promises just that! (Well, to be fair they only promise up to 3.5 inches of vert increase but that might make the difference!)

But can APL deliver on its promise? Let’s find out!

Introducing Athletic Propulsion Labs

APL was founded in 2009 by then 22-year old identical twins Adam and Ryan Goldston who both played basketball and football for the University of Southern California.

Early on, Athletic Propulsion Labs focused on athletic performance and released their first shoe, the Concept 1, in 2010. Shortly after that, their business really took off when the NBA announced the shoes would be banned because they provided an unfair advantage.

Today, APL focuses more on luxury lifestyle shoes selling in up-scale department stores or Lululemon instead of FootLocker and Eastbay.

Fortunately, with their latest sneakers, the “SUPERFUTURE” and the Concept X, APL went back and produced two performance basketball shoes intended to increase your vertical. Let’s take a closer look!

APL Concept X

With the Concept X, APL celebrates the 10th birthday of the release of the original APL Concept 1.

Price:$400.00

Buy from APL

The design looks somewhat similar to previous Concept models, but the interior has changed significantly. For the first time, APL is using 10 spring coils (instead of 8) in their Load’n’Launch technology to increase your vertical even more.

Apart from the Load’n’Launch tech, this shoe performs very well as a regular basketball shoe. The traction is excellent on clean courts, the Future-foam cushioning feels soft and comfortable, and the full-on knit material is super-premium.

APL Superfuture

At “only” $300 the SUPERFUTURE is the cheaper option among APL’s current performance basketball shoe lineup.

Compared to the Concept X it comes with the traditional Loan’n’Launch module that only features 8 spring coils instead of 10. It also comes without the full-length carbon plate which makes the shoe a little bit lighter and allows you to feel the spring technology under your forefoot.

Price:$300.00

Buy from APL

The traction of the APL SUPERFUTURE is crazy good and the impact protection is solid even though you’re closer to the ground compared to Concept X.

The upper is reminiscent of the Adidas N3XT L3V3L and comes with a very premium sock-like upper made from knit that features no laces. Unfortunately, the upper stretches out easily and is not very supportive which means your feet start to move around in the shoe after a while.

Do APL shoes make you jump higher?

The Load’n’Launch Technology

The idea behind the Load’n’Launch technology is to store energy during the “loading” phase of a jump in the spring coils in the forefoot launch pad. During the takeoff phase, this additional energy is returned from the springs to your feet and increases your vertical jump.

The Concept X takes it even further by adding a full-length carbon plate and additional springs to make the energy transfer between athlete and shoe even more efficient.

Does it work?

I had the chance to try out the previous model, the APL Boomer and I experienced small-ish gains myself. However, I never got around to test them in more detail. Fortunately, there are quite a few Youtube videos of people trying out APL shoes, let’s sum up their results:

Sammy from the Solebrothers

YouTube Video

Results: Small and inconsistent increase

Sammy experienced a small vert increase on some days and no increase on others. He also offers some possible explanations for these results:

  • He’s not a great jumper and doesn’t have the necessary technique to benefit from the Load’n’Launch technology
  • He’s too light at 155lbs to make it work

Evan Yee

YouTube Video

Results: Small increase (at best) for most players, more significant increase for more athletic players

Evan and most other testers saw small increases which he possibly attributes to the Placebo effect. More athletic players testing the shoes saw a more significant increase.

Dr. Sean Reyes

YouTube Video

Results: No increase for two-legged jumps from a standstill

Dr. Sean Reyes (a former high jumper) did a very thorough analysis using a vertec to measure his results and didn’t see any increases in a two-legged jump.

Dimarko02

YouTube Video

Results: Small increase in a quick test

The test in this video wasn’t as thorough as in others, but Dimarko02 thought he was jumping a little higher in his APL’s compared to his Kobes.

SKKicks

YouTube Video

Results: 1 inch increase in one-legged jumps / 2 inch increase in tow-legged jumps

SGKicks got the best results out of all Youtube videos I could find. On his two-legged jumps (which he prefers over one-legged jumps) he increased his vertical from 28 inches to 30 inches.

Conclusion:

Results vary: Some testers saw no or only very small increases, others improved significantly and consistently by up to 2 inches. However, nobody reached the 3.5 inches that APL states on their marketing material.

Overall, it seems that more athletic jumpers saw a more significant increase and it’s possible that two-legged jumpers profit more from the Load’n’Launch technology than others.

If you are interested in trying out one of APL shoes, I would go for the Concept X as it has the more advanced Load’n’Launch pad and a more supportive upper which works a lot better for intense basketball games than the laceless upper of the SUPERFUTURE.

You can’t afford the crazy-expensive APL shoes? Fortunately, there are other shoes on the market that allow you to jump high.

In the following paragraphs, I will show you how to find these shoes!

How to find the perfect basketball shoes for vertical jumping:

If your goal is to jump as high as possible, then you need a shoe that fulfills these three criteria:

1. Tight fit

Your shoes have to fit properly if you want to get the best vertical jump results.

There is nothing worse than slipping inside your shoes when trying to jump. Badly fitting shoes make you lose much of your momentum and stability during take-off and seriously reduce your jump height. If your feet don’t feel securely locked in, you might want to consider wearing high-performance basketball socks; they really make a difference.

Overall, you really can’t underestimate the importance of a snug fit. In fact, when basketball players get their vertical jump measured in pre-draft combines, they often wear shoes a half-size too small to ensure as tight a fit as possible!

2. Really good traction

This point is very related to #1. Slippery shoes (or courts) are poison to jumping high.

During a vertical jump, you first gain horizontal speed by running towards the hoop, then you plant your jumping leg (or both) and use your leg(s) as a lever(s) to transform the horizontal speed into vertical speed.

Now, imagine what happens if your shoes slip on the surface when you try to jump.

You either fall or your jump will be much lower because your leg loses tension and can no longer act as an effective lever.

This is also the reason you can jump a lot higher on pristine, regularly-waxed, hardwood courts compared to dusty outdoor courts. You are able to convert horizontal speed into vertical speed much more effectively.

3. Stiff sole & responsive cushioning

When it comes to jumping as high as possible, you don’t want shoes with a lot of cushion. While these may be more comfortable and easier on your joints, they also absorb a lot of energy when you are pushing into the ground and, therefore, negatively affect your vertical.

This is comparable to dribbling a flat basketball. If the air pressure is too low, the ball dampens the impact so much it doesn’t bounce back as high as it would if the ball were fully inflated.

Now that you now what to look for, I want to show you some current basketball shoes suited really well for jumping. These shoes fulfil the three criteria mentioned above: great traction, tight fit and responsive cushioning.

Warning: If you are recovering from a severe ankle injury or if you sprain your ankles easily and frequently, getting ankle support from your shoes might not be enough.

Many NBA players get their ankles taped before every game or wear ankle braces to provide additional stability. Check out this article to learn more about ankle braces and to find out which one helped save Steph Curry’s career.

The Top 10 Most-Supportive Basketball Shoes

1. Air Jordan 36

Performance Rating:
9.1
The latest Air Jordan mainline signature model is, once again, a top-performing shoe.
support rating based on 8 reviews

2. Nike Air Zoom GT Jump

Performance Rating:
8.9
The tech-loaded Nike GT Jump's performance is outstanding.
support rating based on 8 reviews

3. Nike Lebron 19

Performance Rating:
8.9
The Nike LeBron 19 is better in almost every way compared to last year's model.
support rating based on 8 reviews

4. New Balance Kawhi 2

Performance Rating:
8.5
The Kawhi 2 is an improvement on the 1 in almost every way.
support rating based on 8 reviews

5. Air Jordan 37

Performance Rating:
8.4
The Air Jordan 37 is a top performer with bouncy forefoot cushioning and strong materials.
support rating based on 5 reviews

6. Nike Air Deldon

Performance Rating:
8.3
The Air Deldon has a comfortable cushioning setup but inconsistent overall performance.
support rating based on 3 reviews

7. Nike Kyrie 8

Performance Rating:
8.3
The Nike Kyrie 8 is a welcome improvement in the Kyrie lineup.
support rating based on 7 reviews
Pros:
Consistent traction
Amazing forefoot Zoom Strobel
Cons:

8. Li-Ning Way of Wade 9 Infinity

Performance Rating:
8.3
The Li-Ning Way of Wade 9 Infinity provides plenty of traction and plays very springy.
support rating based on 3 reviews
Pros:
Strong, grippy traction
Boa system helps keep you secure
Cons:
The price is expensive
Feels high off the ground
What do the experts think?
Reviewers agree that the grippy traction is the best part of the Li-Ning Way of Wade 9 Infinity. The cushioning setup feels springy, but the impact protection could be better. It's great at propelling players forward. The materials are thin and breathable, and the lacing system is well done. None of the reviewers mentioned any glaring issues with support, which is a positive sign for a shoe that's so high off the ground. With excellent traction, and a strong, durable outsole, the Way of Wade 9 Infinity offers the tech and performance to warrant its high price tag.

Frequently asked questions about ankle support

Do high-top basketball shoes prevent ankle sprains?

High Tops wrap your ankles, so they must logically provide more ankle support than comparable low-tops, right?
Not so fast! Scientific studies have analyzed the frequency of ankle sprains of players wearing high tops versus players wearing low-top basketball shoes and couldn’t find a difference. The additional collar height is not restrictive enough where it can save you from rolling your ankles. Another study showed that the fewest injuries occurred in players wearing low-top shoes and laced ankle stabilizers.

How do I find a shoe with a lot of ankle support?

If high-tops are not the solution, what else can you look for?

Lateral Outrigger

The lateral outrigger is the extension of the outsole on the lateral side that increases the width of the shoe and provides additional stability. By providing a wider base, the outrigger makes it mechanically much more difficult for your shoes to roll during hard cuts and crossovers. See an example of a lateral outrigger in the Crazy Explosive 2017:

lateral outrigger

Tough upper material and great lockdown

You want to look for a shoe that securely locks down your feet and prevents unnecessary side-to-side movement. Make sure that the shoes fit tightly and that the upper material is strong enough to hold your feet even on aggressive movements.

Your last pair of basketball sneakers has absolutely no traction left, you had to glue the outer-sole back onto the upper, and the cushioning has completely bottomed out?

How do you find great deals?

Budget Models or Shoes From Last Season

Find well-performing budget models at an affordable list price or older models that sell for a much-reduced price because their successor is already out. Well-known budget models like the Nike Zoom Rise, or Under Armour Charged Controller are not backed by signature players and retail for around $100.

These models often perform just as well as much more expensive signature line shoes but save money by focusing on more affordable materials, less cutting-edge tech, and a much smaller marketing budget.

On the other hand, you can find signature shoes like Air Jordans or the Kobe line that often entered the market at almost $200 for half their price if you are willing to wait for a year.

The 10 Best Outdoor Basketball Shoes – Durability and Performance https://www.thehoopsgeek.com/best-outdoor-basketball-shoes/ https://www.thehoopsgeek.com/best-outdoor-basketball-shoes/#comments Tue, 13 Mar 2018 17:46:26 +0000 https://www.whatsmyvertical.com/?p=7455 Find a list of the best-performing basketball shoes that feature sturdy materials and hard rubber which make them durable enough for outdoor use.

The post The 10 Best Outdoor Basketball Shoes – Durability and Performance appeared first on The Hoops Geek.

If you play a lot of outdoor basketball you are probably familiar with this problem: Most basketball shoes are designed for indoor use and won’t last very long on rugged outdoor courts.

So, unless you want to buy a new pair every month, it is important to find shoes that can take the beating of playing on blacktop.

How do you recognize good outdoor basketball shoes?

  • The outsole is made from hard and durable rubber
  • The traction grooves are wide and deep
  • They shouldn’t cost a fortune because they won’t last forever
  • The upper material needs to be tough and resilient

Unfortunately, big basketball shoe brands release very few (or none) dedicated outdoor basketball shoes these days. So if you can’t afford to customize your favorite Nike ID sneaker with a durable XDR outdoor rubber sole, you need to find regular basketball shoes that also work well outdoors

In reality, this means you need to watch dozens of shoe reviews and hope that the reviewer mentions if this particular shoe works outdoors. Check any Youtube video about a basketball shoe and there is a good chance that someone asked this question in the comments!

To help you avoid wasting so much time watching sneaker videos I have checked out 1117 reviews of 233 of the most popular basketball shoes and recorded the opinion of the reviewers about traction, cushion, material, support, fit and also outdoor usage.

Users of thehoopsgeek.com can also leave their own outdoor rating for their shoes. You can check out the complete list of shoes here.

Below you can find a list of affordable basketball ranked by combined user and expert outdoor ratings (minimum 5 ratings):

  • 100% Outdoor Rating based on 6 reviews
  • The Nike Fly By Mid 3 definitely punches above its weight class.
  • Players who are budget conscious or who're looking for a pair to beat up.

  • Great for players of any position who look for court feel and ankle support.
  • 89% Outdoor Rating based on 31 reviews
  • The Nike Giannis Immortality is one of the better signature budget models available.
  • Best for price-conscious players looking for a shoe that feels quick.

The Best Outdoor Basketball Shoes

1. Nike Fly By Mid 3

Performance Rating:
7.4
The Nike Fly By Mid 3 definitely punches above its weight class.
Overall rating based on 4 reviews
Pros:
The cushion feels surprisingly good.
Traction doesn't falter.
Cons:
Materials look and feel cheap.
May not be wide-foot friendly.
What do the experts think?
Nike's latest entry in the Fly By Mid lineup feels like one of the best bang for your buck models on the market. The traction does everything that players need it to do. It performs well on clean and dusty courts, and it only needs minimal wiping. Cushioning is also a pleasant surprise considering the price of the shoe. It feels low to the ground and gives plenty of impact protection. The only con is that it isn't the most responsive. The materials are the one part of the shoe that reflects the price. They feel and look cheap. In terms of performance, they hold up nicely. When it comes to support and lockdown, the shoe does what you need it to do. The Nike Fly By Mid 3 may have the lowest price tag in Nike's basketball shoe lineup, but it is far from being Nike's lowest performer.

2. Nike Air Max Impact 3

Performance Rating:
8.4
Great shoe for traction and outdoor use
Overall rating based on 3 reviews
Pros:
Traction for the price is great
Stability and support are solid
Cons:
Materials feel cheap
Not the best impact protection
What do the experts think?
The Nike Air Max Impact 3 provides great traction at a budget price, and reviewers agree that it bites hard on all surfaces. The cushioning is firm, but the Air Max unit feels more stable than similar setups in Nike's lineup. Like other budget shoes, the materials aren't the best quality, but they don't hinder performance. For support and lockdown, the shoe provides solid lateral stability and containment. The firm cushioning helps to keep your foot secure. Overall, the Nike Air Max Impact 3 is a decent offering at an affordable price point.

3. New Balance TWO WXY

Performance Rating:
8.9
The New Balance TWO WXY is a very good all-around performer.
Overall rating based on 2 reviews
Pros:
Great traction
Very responsive cushion
Cons:
Impact protection could be better
Weird fit
What do the experts think?
The traction on the New Balance TWO WXY is one of the best aspects of the shoe and has an awesome bite. The durability is okay for outdoor use. The cushion setup features Fuel Cell foam and is very low to the ground here. You get good court feel and responsiveness with okay impact protection. The materials are mostly thin knits and textiles that are comfortable and perform well. These fit a little long and pretty narrow, so it is recommended to try them on before buying. They do come in wide sizes. The support and lockdown are great and have you covered on explosive moves and crossovers. Overall the New Balance TWO WXY is a great performer in pretty much every area and comes in at a fair $140 price tag.

4. Nike Giannis Immortality

Performance Rating:
7.8
The Nike Giannis Immortality is one of the better signature budget models available.
Overall rating based on 4 reviews
Pros:
Traction performed well.
Responsive and lightweight on foot.
Cons:
Support is inconsistent.
Materials could perform better.
What do the experts think?
Most reviewers felt that the traction on the Nike Giannis Immortality performed great. The rubber compound and the deep grooves on the pattern gripped nicely on indoor courts and didn't pick up too much dust on dirtier courts. The full-length Phylon cushion consistently surprised reviewers. The Phylon is firm but not as firm as the cushion found in other budget models. It has a slight amount of impact protection as well. Materials feel nice on foot, but the performance was inconsistent among reviewers. Reviewers also found the support and lockdown to be a bit inconsistent. The Immortality is lacking in heel padding, and the forefoot containment can be spotty at times. At the end of the day, the Nike Giannis Immortality is a budget-friendly model that performs quite well when taking the price into consideration.

5. Adidas D.O.N Issue #4

Performance Rating:
8.0
Overall rating based on 2 reviews
Pros:
Cons:
What do the experts think?

6. Nike Precision 6

Performance Rating:
7.9
Nike's Precision 6 offers solid support and traction for its price range.
Overall rating based on 3 reviews
Pros:
Support and lockdown are solid
Traction grips nicely
Cons:
Not a lot of impact protection
Can pick up dust fairly quickly
What do the experts think?
Nike's latest entry in the Precision lineup, the Precision 6, provides grippy traction that performs well, especially considering the price point. Because the shoe is a budget model, the cushioning lacks any tech. It's responsive, but there is little impact protection. The materials are nothing special, but they feel comfortable and don't hinder performance. Support is where the shoe excels. Reviewers report the support and lockdown exceeded their expectations, despite being a budget shoe. Overall, the Nike Precision 6 is a shoe all players on a budget should consider picking up. It offers plenty of performance outside of cushioning.

7. Adidas Harden Vol. 5

Performance Rating:
6.9
James Harden's 5th signature shoe is a disappointing basketball shoe
Overall rating based on 4 reviews
Pros:
Good lateral stability
Cons:
Bad traction
Awful heel slippage
What do the experts think?
The bite of the Harden Vol. 5 is poor and doesn't grip well on dusty or even clean courts. Outdoors, the traction performs a little better and doesn't wear down too quickly. The combination of Boost and Lightstrike provides a responsive cushion setup with good court feel. However, reviewers complained about the rigid midsole that didn't flex well. The materials feel very plasticky and hard which is disappointing in a $130 signature sneaker. The support is good laterally, but reviewers had a lot of issues with heel slippage despite the thick Achilles pillows. Overall the Harden Vol. 5 is disappointing and wasn't recommended by any of the reviewers.

9. Adidas Harden Vol. 6

Performance Rating:
8.4
One of the best Harden models to date
Overall rating based on 7 reviews
Pros:
The traction is better than last year
Full-length Boost midsole is plush
Cons:
Materials don't feel premium
What do the experts think?
The Adidas Harden Vol. 6 is a much-needed improvement compared to Vol. 5. Reviewers agree that the traction performs very well, and is minimally affected by dusty conditions. Adidas's Boost foam makes a return on this year's iteration, and the shoe feels responsive. The court feel on the shoe is also fantastic. The materials start out stiff, but they quickly become foot-conforming and comfortable. The fit is also much more forgiving than previous Harden models. Most reviewers had no issues with the sizing. When it comes to the support and lockdown, the materials and fit combine to keep your feet secure no matter what movements you're making. Adidas returns to their roots with the full-length Boost, similar to the Harden Vol. 1, and they've revitalized the Harden lineup with the release of the Harden Vol. 6.

How do you find good outdoor shoes?

Before you start to search for your next pair of outdoor basketball shoes, you should be clear about what you are actually looking for. What differentiates a great outdoor sneaker from a regular indoor performer? Let’s find out!

Durability of the rubber

The rubber of the outsole suffers the most from playing on rougher outdoor courts. If your shoes feature a soft rubber compound you will probably end up with a completely slick outsole, or even worse, holes in your shoes, pretty fast! Overall, there are two things you want to look for when it comes to outsoles:

Solid and dense rubber:

You can either go with regular shoe models that come with a firmer rubber compound out of the box like the Adidas D Rose or the Nike Lebron Soldier line. Or you look for shoes that are specifically made for outdoor use. Especially Chinese brands produce a lot of outdoor models like the Anta KT Outdoor Low as indoor courts are much harder to find there compared to the US.

If you can afford to spend a little more on your outdoor shoes, you can also customize your favorite Nike Sneaker with an XDR (extra durable rubber) outsole using NikeID.

Wide traction pattern:

A very narrow traction pattern will attract a lot of dirt and rubble and lose grip quickly. Make sure to get a traction pattern with wide and deep grooves that will last a lot longer on dirty blacktop.

Durability of the upper material

The upper material usually suffers less from outdoor play as it shouldn’t be in contact with the surface of the court all that often. But if you tend to toe-drag a lot, or if other players are stepping on your feet all the time you might want to look into more durable upper materials like fuse or mesh.

Cushion

Indoor courts are much easier on the joints than less-forgiving outdoor courts. Especially, if you have recurring knee problems, you shoud look for shoes with more comfortable cushioning that reduce the stress you put on your joints. If you are a younger and lighter player, additional cushioning is probably not as important, but firm shoes can still lead to sore legs after a day of playing outdoors.

Price

Inevitably, shoes that you use outdoors will have a shorter lifespan than shoes that are only used on pristine hardwood courts. Therefore, it might make sense to look for cheaper shoes that you can replace more often. Playing in $200 Air Jordan outdoors could become expensive really quickly!

Nike – what started off as a tiny importer of Japanese trainers in 1964 is the biggest and most popular sports brand in the world in 2019 with a total revenue of almost $40 billion!

It’s difficult to keep track of all Nike basketball shoes that exist on the market: Nike not only designs the signature models of Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and Paul George, but also popular team models like the Hyperdunks, or the Lebron Soldier series; not to mention the wide variety of cheaper budget models.

To get a good idea of all the models on the basketball shoe market I have decided to create a database with all basketball shoes where I could find at least three trustworthy reviews on Youtube or sneaker blogs. In total, I have added 233 shoes so far and read or watched exactly 1117 reviews in doing so.

The following list shows the ten best basketball shoes by Nike ordered by their average overall rating. Shoes were last updated on Nov 27, 2022

6. Nike Kyrie 8

Performance Rating:
8.5
The Nike Kyrie 8 is a welcome improvement in the Kyrie lineup.
Overall rating based on 7 reviews
Pros:
Consistent traction
Amazing forefoot Zoom Strobel
Cons:

7. Nike Cosmic Unity 2

Performance Rating:
8.4
The Nike Cosmic Unity 2s materials make the shoe an improvement from last year's model, but only slightly.
Overall rating based on 7 reviews
Pros:
Zoom Strobel cushioning
Lighter than last year
Cons:
Fit can be tricky
What do the experts think?
Like many other Nike shoes, the Cosmic Unity 2 uses a full-length Zoom Strobel. It performs terrifically, blending cushioning and responsiveness well. The traction performed well for most reviewers, and there were no complaints. The materials saw the biggest improvement as the shoe is lighter this year without sacrificing performance. There we no reported issues with support and lockdown. The shoe has all the features needed to keep you contained. Some reviewers reported that the shoe fits long and others reported that it fits narrow. Overall, the Nike Cosmic Unity 2 is a steady and balanced performer across the board and excels in cushioning.

8. Nike PG 6

Performance Rating:
8.4
Paul George's signature shoe line continues its consistent run.
Overall rating based on 5 reviews
Pros:
Grippy traction
Plenty of court feel
Cons:
Slightly narrow forefoot
No Air cushioning
What do the experts think?
Nike's latest entry in the Paul George signature shoe lineup continues to deliver on performance despite the cushioning changeup. Similar to previous models, the traction bites hard. It grips like glue on clean courts and still performs on dustier courts. The switch to a React foam midsole is the biggest change compared to last year's model. Reviewers agree that the cushion provides responsiveness and impact protection. The materials on the shoe are breathable and comfortable. Support is also not an issue due to the lacing setup and outsole construction. Most reviewers had no issues recommending the Nike PG 6 because it suits many different playstyles.

9. Nike Air Max Impact 3

Performance Rating:
8.4
Great shoe for traction and outdoor use
Overall rating based on 3 reviews
Pros:
Traction for the price is great
Stability and support are solid
Cons:
Materials feel cheap
Not the best impact protection
What do the experts think?
The Nike Air Max Impact 3 provides great traction at a budget price, and reviewers agree that it bites hard on all surfaces. The cushioning is firm, but the Air Max unit feels more stable than similar setups in Nike's lineup. Like other budget shoes, the materials aren't the best quality, but they don't hinder performance. For support and lockdown, the shoe provides solid lateral stability and containment. The firm cushioning helps to keep your foot secure. Overall, the Nike Air Max Impact 3 is a decent offering at an affordable price point.

10. Nike Zoom Freak 4

Performance Rating:
8.3
The Nike Zoom Freak 4 is a worthy upgrade in Giannis Antetokounmpo's line.
Overall rating based on 6 reviews
Pros:
Reliable traction after break-in
Cushion feels springy
Cons:
Torsional support is not the best
What do the experts think?
The traction on the Zoom Freak 4 takes time to break in, but once it does, it performs reliably afterwards. The two forefoot Zoom Air units are bouncy but can take a lot of force to feel them. The foam feels springy regardless, though. Material quality is a letdown. Nike didn't use premium materials, but they hold up for performance. One improved feature is the fit. The shoe accommodates more foot shapes and is better for players with slightly-wide feet. Reviewers mentioned the torsional support isn't the best, but it didn't take away from the lockdown and stability of the shoe. The Nike Zoom Freak 4 performs well in all performance basketball categories while being a shoe for price-conscious players.

5 Reasons to buy Nike Basketball Shoes

1. Great Fit

Nike has been in the basketball shoe business forever and they have really perfected the fit of their shoes in my opinion. All versions of a specific model run similarly long and wide. That means if last year’s Kobe model fit you perfectly in size 10, then it’s highly likely that the next model will too!

There is no need to find a sneaker store to try on each pair. I bought Kobe models online for years on and never had any problems, the same can’t be said about every shoe brand!

2. Your Favourite Basketball Player is with Nike

Most of the great basketball players have signed a signature deal with Nike. If you’re a fan of Kyrie Irving, Lebron James, Kevin Durant, Paul George or Kobe Bryant then you’ll definitely want to go with Nike and rock their latest signature models.

3. Great Tech

Nike has always been a driver of innovation in the world of performance basketball shoes. The debut of Nike Zoom Air revolutionized the cushioning of basketball sneakers in 1995 and even over 20 years later it’s still the most responsive cushioning system on the market!

4. The Iconic Swoosh

There is no denying that Nike makes some of the best looking basketball shoes on the market. Phil Knight bought the design of the now-famous Nike swoosh for an incredible $35 from design student Carolyne Davidson – that’s got to be one of the best investments of all time!

5. There’s a Shoe for Everybody!

Nike releases so many basketball shoes – they truly have a model that works perfectly for every type of basketball player. Big and heavy guys pick the Lebron 17, quick guards the Kyrie 6 and if you like cushioning and have narrow feet then the KD 13 is perfect!
